The above box contains my results from this right/left brain dominance quiz. http://www.intelliscript.net/test_area/questionnaire/questionnaire.cgi Studies from the past decade, using MRIs and PET scans of straight and gay, male and female brains seem to indicate that straight men and lesbians share brain proportions (with left dominance and the left hemisphere being somewhat larger than the right), while gay men tend to share right dominance and equal hemisphere size with straight women. The PET scans, measuring the flow of blood to different parts of the brain, also indicate more "traffic" toward logical function with gay female and straight male brains, while straight women and gay men have greater activity tying thought to emotion and creativity. If you, dear reader, have a better understanding of brain function, I welcome your input. Having recently "studied" this topic by reading a number of articles online, I have at best an semi-informed layman's perspective. Recent publications vigorously deny the importance and even existence of right- and left-brain dominance. So have fun, but remain skeptical. What I am an expert about is my own psyche. And my own experience. As another glorious Pride Weekend draws to a close, I'd like to reflect on what brings me, an out gay man, a feeling of pride. I am proud of • the men and women who stepped up and helped when HIV/AIDS struck • the families who've wholeheartedly loved and supported family members who've come out as gay or transgendered.... or really, come out in any way • my sisters and brothers of color who've faced prejudice in ways beyond my experience and understanding • San Francisco and Amsterdam and all the places that have modeled more than tolerance, places that have celebrated their diversity from long before it became fashionable • my mother for always giving unbounded, unconditional love to her own four children and her grandchildren, as well as to so many other young people, giving us a brilliant warmth and trust that we may pass on to others • the thinkers and speakers and writers and marchers who, both singly and together, led and lead us to work for peace and equality, no matter how long it takes and finally • myself, for never wavering in my determination to find light in love and self-regard through action dance your rainbow - sing your colors |
